Garland had never
been to Evansville prior to becoming an associate with William D. Powell in
1982. Originally from Clark County, Indiana, Garland has found Evansville and
the civility of its legal community very much to his liking, and now
considers Evansville his home. Garland became a
partner in the law firm of Frick and Powell in 1986. When Mr. Powell died
less than a year later, Garland contacted John B. Whinrey and their firms
merged a few months later. Although Garland also
practices in the areas of estate planning and administration, business and
corporate law, and domestic relations, the bulk of Garland's practice is real
estate work, including title work and closings. In recent years, Garland has
also developed expertise in the Medicaid area, dealing with issues of
eligibility and transfer of assets, and he enjoys the challenges that this
area of the law provides him to help preserve a client's assets. Garland is the fourth
of five children and comes from what he describes as a "very close
knit family." Although his parents are now deceased, he strives to
help keep his family close by spending much of his free time with his sister
and three brothers, and their families, all of whom still live in or around
his hometown of Clarksville. Garland is divorced and has no children, which
he says gives him ample opportunity to spoil his nieces and nephews. Garland is a member
of the EBA real estate committee and has served as chairperson of the Elder
Law committee. He is a past president of the Reitz Home Museum and a Big
Brother volunteer. Garland was chosen "Boss of the Year" in
1995 by the Evansville Legal Secretaries Association. Garland attended
undergraduate school at Indiana University (1976) and received his law degree
from Indiana University School of Law (1982). Garland enjoys
walking, working around his house, and writing. He is an avid IU basketball
fan and enjoys listening to John Mellencamp songs, the words to which he
knows by heart. He says that he will try most anything once, including
spelunking and white water rafting, both of which have made his "once
and only once" list.
